Catfish

Texas songwriter, Sam "Catfish" Routh, learned to play the guitar and sing while living in Texarkana, TX.  By age ten he was singing on a local radio program.  In 1962, Catfish and his brother, Lew, were the youngest paid performers working the weekend folk music coffeehouse circuit in the Midwest and South.  In high school Catfish changed to rock and roll and formed the rock band, "Front Page News."  That same year Dial Record Co. released, nationwide, the "Front Page News", recording "Thoughts & After Thoughts", written by Catfish.  In 1969, Catfish signed a publishing contract, joined ASCAP and formed the "Natchez Trace".  The Natchez Trace record "You Owe It to Me", written by Catfish, is a Southeast regional hit.  In 1973, the Natchez Trace were invited by B. J. Thomas to be his opening act on his sixteen city "Rain Drops Keeping Falling On My Head Tour."  In 1974, while a staff writer for Sony/Tree Publishing, Doug Kershaw recorded two songs written by Catfish, "Play Fiddle Play" and "Mardi Gras," on his Warner Brothers Album "Douglas James Kershaw."   In 1979, Catfish joined the Connie Stevens show as a staff writer while she performed at the Flamingo Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV.  To date Catfish has 100 songs published with Tree Publishing in Nashville, TN.  Sam "Catfish" Routh is now living in Galveston, TX, where he is writing more songs and cataloging a stack of unpublished original songs for the family-owned publishing company.  In his spare time he coons for oysters, crabs, fishes and creates incredible meals from the fruits of the sea.  Catfish is a free-spirited songwriter and storyteller who has performed his original songs from New Orleans to Kingston, Jamaica.  His lyrics paint mental images of a life that he has seen, lived, or imagined.  Sam "Catfish" Routh is a songsmith that best describes himself in a song he wrote entitled "Word Weaver".
