Nina Kay

Nina
Kay
Chatham,
the daughter of an American Air Force pilot, was born just outside
London,
England, and thus began her gypsy-type lifestyle.
In
a household
with an older brother and sister who were professional musicians, music
came
naturally to Nina Kay. At an early age
she was astonishing audiences with her voice, her first television
appearance
was on a local show in Austin, Texas at the age of 10. When she
was 14
Nina Kay formed a rock band,
appropriately named “Dawning”. The
groups she sang with over the next 10 years varied from hard rock to
soul and even to cabaret music in Houston
where she performed with The Mack and John
Show.

It
was
in Houston
that Nina Kay met and fell in love with country music as it began to
mingle
with the southern roots of rhythm and blues in artists like Reba Mc
Entire,
Bonnie Rait and K. T. Oslin. This was
when she began to play the piano and write her own songs. In ’82, with
a
country album on the market she toured the southwest. Based out
of Scottsdale, Arizona Nina Kay enjoyed
entertaining
tourists at “The Grapevine” in old town Scottsdale, during the peak
season for
the next five years. During the
off-season she lived on the road or at sea. Nina
Kay wowed audiences on Princess, and Royal
Caribbean cruises as well as in some of the finest hotels in
Europe,
from the northern tip of Sweden to the French Riviera.
Back in the states she was a favorite at
many hotels across the southwest including Harrah’s At Lake Tahoe
where she appeared regularly. Nina Kay
brings a
little bit of all her experiences to the stage, particularly her many
brushes
with blues and jazz on the road. While
working in Arizona she formed a band called “The
Kactus Kats”,
which was truly a unique mixture of country and jazz artists
to create an
original sound. One review labeled Nina
Kay as a country-jazz singer and the label stuck. After 6 years
living out of
the suitcase
family brought Nina Kay back to Texas. “Traveling and meeting
people
from all
over the world is an enriching experience, but like Dorothy said
“there’s no
place like home” and I was ready to find home”, says Nina Kay, and so
she
did.
In 1994 she married, Galvestonian,
Steve Greenberg. “Now.... I’ve got sand between my
toes ", says
Nina, “I have landed, God I love
Galveston”…………….end of story…
